Character's Name: Utena Tenjou Character's Canon: Revolutionary Girl Utena Character's Age: 14 Canon Point: End of last episode, “Someday, We’ll Shine Together” Background/History:I was never playing when I dueled! (cw: sexual assault)
Strengths:
BRAVE Utena’s bravery in the face of adversity is a trait that she manages to hold onto even when she begins to experience self-doubt or gets discouraged. She immediately comes to Wakaba’s defense in the first episode and challenges Saionji. She has no qualms about challenging authority — her self-image and stubborness about wearing a modified boys’ school uniform despite backlash is a recurring theme. She defends herself (and Anthy, eventually) against the other duelists despite the greater technical skill in fencing that most of them have. Most importantly, during her very first encounter with Anthy as a child and witnessing the horror of her eternal suffering, she vows to save her from it, despite being a grieving child herself. During the Duel Called Revolution, Utena physically drags herself, gravely injured, her sword destroyed and the illusion that had held her up through most of her life shattered, to the door containing Anthy’s coffin. She stays dedicated to reaching her even at the cost of her own life.
CHARISMATIC While this is partly because of the very deliberate way in which she presents, Utena is, for better or worse, very charming to a lot of other people. She is outwardly friendly, lively and good-natured, and generally guileless enough that people tend to be drawn to her. Boys, at least on a surface level, treat her with a sense of camaraderie, and she has throngs of girls who are infatuated with her. Whether or not she actually enjoys this attention is up in the air, and she notably maintains a sort of distance from a lot of the NPC fangirls and even her friend Wakaba, but there’s no real denying that she’s at least performing well enough to be magnetic to other people.
NOBLE While selfish at points and self-centered, Utena is, at the very root of herself, an inherently good person, even though her actions aren’t always kind. She is one of first Duelists who takes an actual interest in Anthy’s well-being, and it is her insistence that Anthy look to her as a friend she can count on that finally begins to thaw out their relationship. Her disgust and anger at Mikage manipulating the Black Rose duelists is one of the few times she expresses real, genuine rage, and in the final duel she rejects her “prince” in Akio and her source of childhood comfort even though it would be much easier for her to do so. When Anthy begs her to leave Ohtori and forget everything she experienced, Utena literally pulls her away from a ledge and apologizes to her for hurting her. Utena might not always have the right idea, but her heart is always in the right place.
Weaknesses:
NAIVE As someone who has spent most of her life using a fairytale edit of her parents’ death (and her subsequent witnessing of “Eternity”) to keep her stable, Utena’s approach to most things is fairly naive and somewhat childish. She is often short-sighted and thoughtless; she does not take the duels seriously for a great deal of time, and often approaches terrible or bizarre things by sugarcoating them, compartmentalizing, or dismissing them as something different. If it’s unpleasant, she doesn’t want to deal with it. If it’s ugly, she doesn’t want to see it. She is easily manipulated and her thought processes are fairly malleable both because she is so young and as a result of her fixation on her “Prince.” Touga is able to deceive her in their duel by simply planting in her head the idea that he might be her prince, and Anthy often manipulates her into taking certain paths by claiming an interest or disinterest in something. For example she refuses to attend a ball because of Utena’s lack of interest, which then gets Utena fired up because she wants Anthy to make friends, and quietly insists that she does want friends when Utena expresses hesistance at fighting Touga later. This propensity for sugarcoating and avoidance leaves her especially vulnerable to Akio’s much darker manipulations and outright sexual grooming later in the series.
SELF-INVOLVED Like most teenagers, Utena is self-centered. While her desire to “help” Anthy might look as if it is coming from a good place because relative kindness in comparison to the other Duelists, for a great deal of time she uses Anthy’s presence as an emotional crutch, and clearly projects her own thoughts and emotions onto her without any consideration as to her real feelings. Her relationship with her other friend, Wakaba, is similar: Utena believes they are best friends, and this is to some extent, true, but she misunderstands, ignores, and even sometimes belittles Wakaba’s feelings. This also extends to the other Duelists. Utena gets almost self-righteous in her insistence that she is different from the rest of them, even though in the end...she really isn’t.
IMPULSIVE Utena sticks her nose into everything. It’s usually well-meaning, but often annoying. Her immediate need to jump to the defense of someone, or something, gets her involved in the Duels, and she is criticized by the other characters for not understanding or considering the full scope of a situation before running full-tilt into it like a big dummy. She is emotional and hotheaded, easily egged into fighting despite her claims of not enjoying such, is big on speaking before she thinks, and is overall a fan of action over thoughtfulness. Most dangerously, she makes a TON of assumptions about other people based on first impression, either positive or negative, which keeps her further embroiled in the machinations of Ohtori.
Powers/Abilities: Utena is a teenage girl without any special abilities, though she by now has some considerable ability to fence. Other Noteworthy Traits: She apparently is very good at most sports. She is ambidextrous. She’s almost always moving around/stretching, especially when she is nervous or unsure on how to proceed with something. Weapons & Other Special Inventory: Nothing. Color: Red babey! Or a shade of it: #D66B89. Reason being her hair is pink, and it’s a good combo of her passion + love and innocence.
